Home office progress ...

So this is as far as I got with our home office. Disappointing, I know :(

I am once again second guessing my decisions and am wondering if I should stick with my original idea of floating shelves above the computer desk, or if I should perhaps go with some art work instead? What do you think?

Also, we originally planned to have the computer desk closer to the window, which is why we put the power points more to that side. I've now moved the desk so it is in the centre of the wall, but the problem now is that the two power points on the right now stick out. Do you think this is a biggie? Would you rather have power points on the right of the desk or have the desk of centre?

Please excuse the modem. It will eventually be hidden in the cinema built in unit but for now it will have to stay here.

I would love to hear your suggestions as to how to pretty up the desk? I recently bought a small fish bowl vase, would that work, with some flowers in it of course? Also, where can I buy pretty mouse pads?

You can see here how the power points stick out ...

Any ideas on how to conceal the cables?

  1. personally I feel you need a bigger desk :( Sorry. I do love that desk, but it just seems so small in the space.

My desk is the expedit desk, and the cables are hidden behind the shelves, however you could get those little cable sticker things by 3M and make the cables run along the desk and down the leg.

    1. That's very true about the desk being too small for the space. But, because I love the desk so much and am not prepared to buy a replacement any time soon it will just have to stay. Sigh.

  2. Typo have pretty and cheap mousepads - I saw some yesterday on sale for $3 (you could get a couple at that price and change them from week to week). Having said that, their stuff is cheap anyway. I wouldn't worry about the powerpoints too much, they aren't that noticeable in your photos :) Either floating shelves or artwork would look good above the desk but unless the shelves are going to house items you'll use regularly, it'll just be another thing to dust!

    1. Have never heard of Typo until now :)
Is this the correct site: http://www.cafepress.com.au/+typo+mousepads ?

I loathe dusting, and you make an excellent point about floating shelves collecting dust ...

  3. Do you remember that I have a hall table that is too small in my entry? I put something (a chair) next to it to give the illusion of filling up the space. You could put something next to the desk to do this.
I don't have any issues with the power points.
If you do the bookcases I would like to see more than books on it. Some photos and colourful objects.
Those fishbowl vases look fabulous with flowers inside the bowl. If you are not sure what I mean ask me over on the Decorating Forum for a picture:)
Just remember - a clever lady once said Rome wasn't built in a day lol.

  4. Hi B,
Are you able to add cabinets of some sort, either side of the desk? Expedit do smallish ones. If you had them about the same height as the desk it would make it look more balanced, and give you more bench space also.
What about a Bally print above the desk.

    1. Love your ideas Abigail <3

The only thing re: small expedits is that it might be a bit too much Ikea since I am already planning on having 2 expedits (taller ones though) on the wall opposite the desk.

  5. Hi B, that's so funny that I just posted my shelves and it was exactly your question! Yes I would hang the shelves and get them the size of your desk length wise. The longer ones are 75". You can do so much creatively with display on them and can change them easily. I also have them above my tv in the family room. Though the desk is a bit small you can distract that. Perhaps a leaning floor mirror to the left of your desk with a small table in front of it with a vase? Or perhaps the wall mirror with a small bench in front of it? You could also do a large scale art or series of art to the left of the desk. With that and your shelves you should have planty of visual interest. I'm about to take photos of my new office/guest room and did the shelves a sofa bed and the most amazing art. I'll let you know maybe it would help if you see it.

    Hope that helps!

    XOXO,
    Whitney

  6. When I first saw your photos I thought the centred styled one looked best. Could you afford another identical desk so you form one wall of benchspace? Would that fit? This would provide a great work area for tasks non computer related. If you are still going to put bookcases on opposite walls then I'd hang art as you wouldn't need storage if this was the case. Another idea if a second desk it out of question is to put a decorator armchair in corner between desk and window for whip cracking for your exercise buddy, or additional seating for a friend / partner to chat whilst your surfing the net gathering holiday destination ideas! Again, art work to fill that lovely big wall!

    1. I love this desk so much I would love to buy another one (not at their current full price, but when they have a sale of course), but am afraid that it would just encourage MrB (and me perhaps) to use it as a dumping ground for paperwork and what not :(

      Re: decorator chair
Would you in this case recommend leaving the desk in the middle or moving it to the side so that the chair and desk eavenly fill out the space? If to the side would you then hang the art work directly above the desk or in the middle of the wall?

    2. Depending on size of chair B, the desk may need to go left of centre. Artwork bridging space between. Blue tack some mag pages, newspaper cut to approx size and play with the look. One of your 'scored' studded chairs may work here. Cable ties (sticky back - clip front) can be bought from Officeworks to tidy up excess cords once you're happy with layout.

  7. I dont thing the power points are a big issue, they are way more practical being out to the side. I would leave the desk in the middle.

+1 for what Julie-Ann said about a chair or vase

May I ask where you brought your desk? I need to find one that is on the small side.

    3. B, have you considered wall papering the wall the desk is against? I saw a pic last night and it really looked great.

  8. I saw a photo last light of a similar style of white desk up against a wallpaper wall and it really looked great. Have you considered wallpapering just that wall?
